Debbie Downer Thursday...Need Advice Please!

Mom, I don't feel so good.
OHHHHH my poor baby! In case you are wondering, Kitty is normally as slick and smooth as a wet seal.
The whelps are pretty bad on her legs and feet, although the pic doesn't represent it accurately.
The stupid whelps are even on my face! See that ghastly cluster on my lip? I is miserable and have just been sitting here whining.
Back view. Looks like I gots a second tail growing. There is even a whelp on my poop shooter. This stinks..

Mom here. I was in tears as I discovered Kitty's allergic reaction right as I was leaving for work. Thank goodness my mother-in-law came right over to watch her. Benadryl makes the whelps go down for a while, but then they come back. Kitty is not one to eat random things and our house is kept like a surgery center as far as things not being left out to chew or eat. The only new thing she had was a dehydrated sweet potato treat. She has had sweet potato before and not had this reaction so I am worried it was maybe a spider??? But it does seem like the new treat and the reaction go hand in hand. This started yesterday morning. About every 9 hours the whelps come back (I assume when the meds wear off). Please give me some advice here!! Should I take her to the dogtor? Has this happened to any of your pups?

I have been accused of over-reacting with Kitty and rushing the vet in the past so my husband says to give it a couple of days...I do not like this at ALL.

Thanks,
Concerned Mama

Hi Kitty's Mama! This is Mama Mindy. Lily seemed to have gotten those two times in her life and both times I had to take her to the vet. I think she might of stepped on a wasp...so my guess is Kitty somehow got bit or stepped on a bug. That's all I know that have caused the welts on my baby Lily. I hope this information helps.

Hi
We have never had this happen to us, but we wanted to offer you support and advice. Listen to other bloggers. They know. As far as your husband is concerned, just tell him if he wants, and this ever happens to him, you won't rush him to the hospital either. You'll wait three or four days.

Hi Kitty's Mommy! It's Nola's mommy here. Nola has never had a reaction before, but my lab before her did. It maybe a bug bite, she might have gotten something on a walk, or it could be a new reaction to whatever she's eating. I really recommend taking her to the vet, to ease your mind if nothing else. Waiting watching and wonder is no good, so I'd take her in. Hope this helps, keep us updated!
Hugs,

Oh No! Poor baby girl. Allergies are funny. You can be totally fine with something for years and then one day you break out from it. My cat was fine with fish until she turned 10 and from that point on she gets horrible blisters after eating anything with fish. My suggestion is to do trails with different ingredients to see if one of those is the triggers. Lots of dogs near me have become allergic to chicken so maybe look at that first?

Hi Kitty and Kitty's Mama! Its Frank Mum here - I dont care if you have been accused of over-reacting with Kitty and rushing the vet its better to be safe than sorry so my advice is to go to the vet!!! I took Frank to the vet because he had this rash on his tummy and the Vet said that it was better to be an over protective Mum because the sooner the problem is detected the sooner it can be treated, I only had to be perscribed a weeks worth of antibiotics for Franks rash that was £52 but the vet said that if I had waited like most people would the treatment would have been more extensive and more costly!! It sounds so horrible for poor Kitty bless her and look shorrible! I would have got Frank to the vet as soon as the first couple of bumps came up!!! Hope this helps you! Jemma and Frank xxxxxxx

Hi Kitty's mama,
So sorry to see little Kitty's reaction... I hope it is going away now. I don't really have any advice. Clover has bad allergies but never anything like that. To me it seems like it would be more likely to be a spider or bug bite like the others are saying. I would go to the dogtor for sure... Or can you email your vet? Ours tells us to send him a picture if something is out of the ordinary and he can let us know if he wants to see us or if he knows what it is just from the picture.
That would be a good compromise if you could do that!
Hope it's nothing serious, sending hugs.

I will say, I grew up with Bostons and I distinctly remember this occurring on a few occasions. As others have mentioned, it is obviously a reaction - to what, that's hard to say. At the very least call your vet (can't charge you for a phone consult) and see what they recommend. If the Benadryl is working, but the bumps are coming back, it's probably just a stronger reaction than most. That being said, you don't want to risk and internal swelling that impedes Kitty from taking deep breaths, so call the vet and if they ask you to come in - do it! I always say, better safe (and a smidge poorer) than sorry! Good luck and let us know!

If things aren't improving, then we think a trip to the vet is in order. Usually the vet can give a shot to come down the hives. So sorry, poor Kitty. Hope things settle down quickly. Please do update us.

Luckily I have never had such a reaction, but my mom says that if I did, I would be at the vet pronto...no matter what dad might say! As everyone else said, it's better to be a little embarrassed or be known as the crazy lady than to take a chance. It's probably nothing serious, but if the Benadryl isn't permanently getting rid of it, then I think the vets need to help.
Love,
Payton
PS. Get well soon, Kitty!

I would definitely take her to the doc. I got hives from fresh cut grass (mom figured that out) but they were never big like that...
Feel better little one

Poor Kitty. I fall into the quick-to-rush-to-the-vet-for-everything category too. I just think its better to play it safe.
I hope she feels better soon!

Hope she's feeling better. We haven't had this either...but we're like Brooke too and freak out. I'm wondering with everyone also if it is a reaction to a bug? Keep us updated!

Thank you guys so much for the advice. Bloggers always give the best support and you guys actually help more than you realize.

Update on my Kitty-Boo: This morning at 2:43am (when Coco woke us up to go pee/sniff for bugs) she had no hives. Also at 8:20 as I left for work she still had no more hives. I'm really hoping she is hive free when I get home, and I will know that it was a random allergic reaction.
We would have taken her to the vet IMMEDIATELY if her breathing seemed restricted in any way or if there were other symptoms but she had hives only. I did call the vet and they said to treat with Benadryl or come in. Vet receptionist was not really much help and didn't listen to what I had to say :(

Jess - That would be so amazing if they would let us email them, but I would bet money on that not being an option.

Will give another update when I get home today.

I hope Kitty is feeling better! I answered you on Pug Sluts too. Tucker, my Chi, is allergic to everything, except food so this is a common occurrence in our house. He now takes an allergy shot every 3 months which has kept the severity of the reactions down do a mere flush now instead of welts. I also give him Benedryl and an oatmeal bath when I see the skin start to flush. With him it is so many things that we have long since give up trying to figure out what is causing it. I have a tendency to over react with him too, he has a seizure disorder and only weighs 5 pounds so I worry about anything that might set off a seizure so he is far more spoiled than he need be according to my vet. LOL

Thanks Lola and Tucker Mom..I do know Kitty has carpet allergies as well. We only have two rooms with it, but she breaks out in a rash where her skin touched it if she lays down for a while. Poor thing. Grass bothers her too, but nothing serious. If this starts to be a recurring issue I will start looking into regular allergy treatment.

We're sorry to hear Kitty wasn't feeling well. Daisy has a lot of allergies, too, and it's not fun. It seems like she's doing better from your updates, but our mom is like your mom. She takes us to the vet's at the drop of a hat. Dad sometimes thinks she's overreacting but she's been right more than once so she's not taken any chances. She figures it's better to be safe than sorry - and it doesn't wear out her nerves so much to be wondering and wondering for days.

poor kitty! she looks soooooo woebegone in those pics. thank goodness she has such a doting mama to take care of her!

our pugs also get random hives from being out and about -- they get dosed with benadryl and a thorough bath to wash off whatever it is could possibly be causing the reaction. plus or minus a visit to the vet for a shot of steroids. what with my screaming in anguish, the pugs are not big fans.
