Glaucoma..Just go on and wheel me to Denny's

Friends, I got some not-so-great news yesterday. I have GLAUCOMA in my left buggy eye. See, mom has had a feeling for a few months that something was wrong with my eye. Dad took me to the vet and had it checked for scratches, but they said it was fine. Long story short, we went back and insisted on further tests and got the verdict.
It is in the very beginning stages, and the vet man said that he can't believe we noticed it so early. A Mother knows!!!
Boo. Mom has cried, and I had to get a bunch of tests where they prodded my eye-ball. Maybe Andy Cohen can cheer us up...
I told her she could even post this goofy pic of me in the cone of shame. Take note, I do NOT have to wear one, we just tried one on in case of emergency.
Here's the deal: Due to catching this as early as humanly possible, we can treat the glaucoma with drops twice a day, and hopefully keep it from progressing (though there are no guarantees). I really am not affected by it very much at this point other than my eye looking red, and not seeing well at night. Gotta watch my other eye like a hawk to make sure we catch any warning signs.
Coco was sad for me too, but we are all determined to keep things in perspective. There are so many pups out there with horrible injuries/conditions and my little problem doesn't even compare. Heck, we have even met some pups who don't have any eyeballs at all! They do just fine and are happy.

Note from Mom: I am happy to do anything necessary to take care of my baby Kitty. We got her one month after we got married, and she is really like our child. She is happy and playing like usual, so I know she is feeling fine. Even if she loses vision she will learn to cope, the only thing I am worried about are the migraines that result from glaucoma for pups since a pup won't really let you know they are in pain. Any advice from you guys would really put my mind at ease. Thanks!

Sorry for the monstrous post..

We've never heard about doggies getting glaucoma. We will ask around to some of our friends who practice homeopathy and holistic medicine. If we find anything out, we will let you know.
But it's good that your mom caught it and insisted on more tests. Mothers just know.

Oh my poor sweet kitty, I'm so sorry to hear that you have sickies in your eye. We are glad you caught it early I'm sure that really will help. As you know my big bro Swish only has one eyeball. He sees an animal ophthalmologist to help keep his other eye healthy because it has sickies too. I know your mom is probably worried our mom is a worrier too. Mom said her advice is to see an ophthalmologist If possible. We know you have drops for your sickies but also find out what you can do to keep your other eye healthy. Mom puts drops in our eyes, Swish's doc says buggy eyed dogs like us can always use the lubrication in our eyes.

We wish you the best of luck and we are thinking of you and your family.

Lots of healing licks-
Oakley

P.s.- we came to your blog to let you know we received our gift from you. Thanks so much, we will blog about it soon.

We're so sorry to hear about Kitty's eye ball. Our foster puggie El Guapo had the same thing and the drops the vet prescribed did wonders for him! Not to worry Smushie buddy! You have one great momma to catch it so quick. She get's an A+ in our book.

So sorry to hear this, Kitty, but the drops should help a lot since you caught it so early. Mom had a dog once who had glaucoma in both eyes, but his was related to damage to the optic nerve for surgery and the drops were not too successful. Do you know Sissy from http://dontmesswithmytutu.wordpress.com/?

If not, leave them a comment and Mom is sure that they will give you some good information as they are also dealing with glaucoma.

Oh, Kitty, I'm ever so sorry to hear abouts your eyeball. But your momma is super wonderful that she is so in-tune with you that she caught it right away. Give her a treat!

My mom said her Mema had a doggie (a pekingnese) that had to haves both her eyeballs taken out and she made it just fine. And my MOM is even legally blind in one eye and she can drive me places and give me treats and chase me in the backyard. You know, all the impawtant stuff. So I know YOU are gonna do just fine!

Big brindle kisses!

We were so sad to hear this too. It is so lucky that you did catch this early. Was there anything specific that made you guess something was wrong?

Oakley and Swish - Thank you for your comment. I was wondering if we needed to go on the the ophthalmologist, and I think we will take your suggestion. Swish is our role model on how to rock a single eye in style!
Smushies - We didn't know El Guapo had it too. We are glad to know the drops helped him.
OP Pack - Thank you so much for the blog reference! Their bloggy was very helpful.
Two Pitties - I really just noticed very slight things that all added up to let me know something was off. First, Kitty became an even MORE picky eater. Her eye was consistently blood shot looking, while the other eye seemed ok. Her energy level was about 10% down. She also ran into the doorway in the dark, and ended up in another part of the house than where she was supposed to go (hello, she couldn't see!).

Kitty, you are so right. A mother DOES know!

I don't really know anything about glaucoma, but Hanklin and I are both somewhat visually challenged and we do just fine!

As long as you can find the food bowl and a warm lap, you're golden!

Lick ya later!

It sounds like Mom and Dad have everything under control, but perhaps this is a good opportunity for your to discuss some (ahem) "alternative herbal Glaucoma treatment" with them????

Just make sure Coco is in another room and roll up a wet towel under the door crack when you're having your "treatment" (wink wink!)

Give your Mom and Dad some kisses and tell them to chilllllll.....you'll be ok!

Love,
S-Dog

Cheryl - It is scary when our eyeballs are blinky and stuff, but try not to panic. Sometimes sister just whaps me in the eye and I am fine. Try to be conscious of any other signs and you sould be ok.
Thanks Spongy and Licky! We would welcome any info you get. Coco keeps trying to tell mom I am just fishing for treats, but she is a nutball.
Sal - Thanks for the recommendation. You and my Uncle Chip are in tune. Coco says she enjoys weeds in the backyard all the time, but I'm not sure it is the same :)

Poor Kitty!

I definitely recommend going to an ophthalmologist. I see one regularly and he prescribed the drops for me too. They help with my chronic inflammation and early stages of cataracts. Thanks to medical science, surgery can help prevent and even reverse vision loss. Hopefully it won't come to that for either of us. I hope you feel better and be careful where you're going!
